Today, December 21st, has been talked about for years as the day “the world will end”. Some community members are worried, while many simply plan to attend “end of the world” parties.  The idea of December 21st has been shown through many stories including the Hollywood movie “2012”, which presents a fictional story of the brightest and richest humans creating a way to survive a planet wide upheaval while leaving many to die.   Many in the alternative community see a  more peaceful but important change  in human energy being redirected in the new age with a release of tension and anger.  No matter what one believes the question still remains for many – What will happen when the current Mayan 5000 year calendar ends?

Recently at a local gathering to discuss December 21st, 2012 one man cited his belief in precedent from previous Native American prophecy. When the battle of Tippecanoe pushed back native tribes William Harrison used his popularity as a successful Indian fighter to run for President of the United States. Chief Tecumseh sent General Harrison a message containing a prophecy known as “Tecumseh’s Curse”: “‘Harrison will not win this year to be the Great Chief. But he may win next year. If he does … He will not finish his term. He will die in his office.” When informed that no President has ever died in office, Tenskwatawa stated, “But Harrison will die I tell you. And when he dies you will remember my brother Tecumseh’s death. You think that I have lost my powers..I tell you Harrison will die. And after him, every Great Chief chosen every 20 years thereafter will die. And when each one dies, let everyone remember the death of our people.'”

President Abraham Lincoln elected 1860, James Garfield elected 1880, and John F Kennedy elected in 1960 were assassinated. President McKinley elected in 1900, President Harding elected in 1920 and President Roosevelt elected in 1940 died in office of natural causes. When Ronald Reagan, elected in 1980, was shot and lived the curse was ended.

Comparisons have been drawn from December 21st and the Y2K scare. Some feel today will pass with little to no damage and others citing a lack of preparedness.  One man mentioned the case of a New Zealand company that failed to include leap years in their computer programming. When leap year occurred on a weekend all the machines in their factory came on as if it was a weekday but no workers where present thus  leading to equipment breakdowns.  The incident happened again exactly an hour later in their factory in Australia. His suggestion was that December 21 would only be a reminder that nothing had been done to fix the real problems until total breakdown occurred; from the failure to protect peoples outrageous mortgage terms they couldn’t afford to the endless spending of national debt to fund giant corporations with bailouts and no-bid contracts.   “These dates make us look at the people in charge and realize those in charge are not gods and have little in place to protect us when the economy crashs.” Unlike Y2k which would have begun to take effect in different areas as the international dateline passed from midnight to midnight across the world there seems to be little consensus to what time zone to watch for with the Mayan Calendar. Some have suggested Arizona may be the time zone to watch because we do not have daylight savings time and is in the same region the Mayans inhabited.

One seemingly odd idea has to do with the significance of the number 9 as composed of 12/21/12 or adding the numbers together bringing each to 3 then 3+3+3=9.  This argument may seem to reject the Mayan Calendar having any importance to the date. Those interviewed concluded that the Mayan Calendar and Modern Calendar synch together into a deeper numerical mystery.  They note that any number divisible by 9 will add up to 9 in this way; for example 9X125 = 1125 or 1+1+2+5 = 9 or 9X42 = 378 = 10 + 8 or 1+0+8=9.  In explaining this theory we arrive at a seeming error in the first Star Wars movie were Han Solo meets a Jedi seeking fast travel and explains that he should use the Millennium Falcon because “It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs”. Many have questioned why Han Solo would brag about completing this run in parsecs, a measure of distance rather then speed. However this theory represents a new millennium in which ships can zoom across vast distances not with high speed but by using math to reduce distance.  Per this belief 12/21/12 is all about reduction of numbers to their simpler forms thus allowing humanity to find paths of lessened resistance.

Perhaps the strangest idea surrounds a 1991 best-selling role playing game Shadowrun . The game is set after the end date of the Mayan Calendar bringing the return of magic ascending over technology and magical creatures re-emerging.  According to the game, large numbers of humans will “Goblinize” into orks and trolls while human children begin to be born as elves, dwarves, and even more exotic creatures. In North America, Native American tribes will discover their traditional ceremonies and allow them to command powerful spirits and rituals. This is associated with a new Ghost Dance movement that lets them take control of much of the western U.S. and Canada.  In 2011, as the calendar date grew closer, there was a brief resurgence of the game Shadowrun.

It seems unlikely the game would be prophectic but some have pointed to a number of sci-fi predictions that came true such as with Canadian Comic book writer/artist John Byrne. In 1986 Byrne created the Superman “The Man of Steel” miniseries where the first issue featured Superman saving a space shuttle. That same month the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster occurred. Another DC comic by Byrne called “Generations” came out in 2001 with a story set in 2008 featuring an African American as Commander in Chief. In 2008 President Barack Obama was elected President. The most famous prediction was a comic by John Byrne featuring the death of Wonder Woman with the tagline Princess Diana dies. Some fans were shocked when they bought the issue released on a Wednesday and three days later Princess Diana of Wales died in an accident. In 1995 a Star Trek Episode titled “Past Tense part II” one of the policemen says the best baseball team he ever saw was the 1999 New York Yankees. The Yankees swept the World Series that year with an overall playoff record of 11-1, more than four years after this episode originally aired.

Regardless of what one believes will happen on 12/21/2012 it seems many wish to go out with a party. In Phoenix a doomsday dance will be held at Apollo’s Lounge and the Crescent Ballroom will hold a “End of Days Cabaret”.  Many private parties around town will welcome the coming of Cthulu, the suspected arrival of aliens, or other mysteries most of these poking fun at doomsday sayers. There will also be a “Last Friday Ever..” performance show to usher in a “new golden age” at Firehouse Gallery on Roosevelt Row in Downtown Phoenix. One partygoer noted “We’ve heard doomsday predictions many times, the only thing we can do is let our families and friends know we love them and go on with our lives, a party is a great way to do that”.
